Gardening Courses for 2009 - 10

Location: The Friary, Maldon Essex

Whilst aimed at the beginner to help remove any anxieties about gardening, the experienced gardener should also get something from these informal, short courses. Each course lasts just one term, and consists of ten, two hour sessions. The three courses will cover three different areas of Horticulture, but with my 'gardening open areas' I like to encourage, we tend to look at just about anything! As you progress you will build up a fairly extensive portfolio to help you gain a better understanding of your garden. Each term is constructed as such:

Term 1: Getting Started. Back to basics with the aim of appreciating the more fundamental side of gardening. Topics will cover soil structure, the plant, seasonal planting and planting combinations. Course Code: GMA5B11

Term 2: The Kitchen Garden. From the garden to the kitchen - create your own kitchen garden and involve the family too! Course Code: GMA5B12

Term 3: Aspects Of Design. A look into the world of Garden Design - then be creative in your own garden and watch your ideas come to life! Course Code: GMA5B13

N.P.T.C. Land Based Studies

I am fortunate enough to be involved with helping the young students on their Land Based Studies N.P.T.C. run by Writtle Horticultural College, in conjunction with Plume School, Maldon, Essex. These vocational courses are based at the Parks Department, Promenade Park in Maldon and at the College itself. With much of the work taking part in and around the promenade park, the staff at the parks department play an active role with the students during their time there.

Over two subsequent years, the skills the students develop, within all areas of Amenity Horticulture, work towards each years award. There is a fair amount of theory and classroom work but the majority of their time is spent outside on practical tasks. These include - soil cultivation, planting, pruning and propagation. During the courses they will have to identify and name several trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, pests and diseases. They will learn about design and have a project to work on - from concept to planting! They will be encouraged to develop an understanding of working as a team in a safe environment.

On a personal level, I feel very privileged to work on this valuable and important project. Not only do I get to be with some really great people but get to work in a stunning environment. If you click on the picture below there are more details and you will get to see the 'office!' Opens in a new window.
